Using a Crane? Asses the RISK - Stop & Think

Injuries – Causes and Prevention
Understanding the Risk
The risk of injury and damage in a crane accident is high because :
Working at heights involves potential energy . This is energy which something has because of its state. A load up high can turn its potential energy into Kinetic energy when it becomes a moving object if it falls.
Cranes overturn due to excessive moment..
Under European Directives, employers ( in concert with the work force) have to undertake a general review of the work site risks and control them as much as possible. This applies to cranes; just as it does to static plant. Normally five steps are taken:
1. Identify the Hazards (things which can cause harm)
2. Identify who might be harmed and why.
3. Evaluate the risks (the chance of hazard)& take precautions.
4. Record the findings.
5. Review the situation from time to time.
Causes of Injury
Most people are injured by being:
  Run over by mobile cranes.
Struck by things falling off cranes.
  Crushed when cranes topple.
